MUSEUM

The Municipal Museum of Natural History of Comiso was founded in 1991. It is a Scientific Institution recognised by the Ministry of the Environment (CITES Secretariat, code IT030) under the Washington Convention. With an exhibition area of over 1,500 square metres, including the Palaeontology and Zoology Sections, the museum facilities also include a teaching classroom and 800 square metres of storage spaces and laboratories.

The museum’s holdings consist of 25 collections and more than 30,000 exhibits, featuring fossils from various geological eras, and numerous zoological specimens from local sites, as well as from different continents. The exhibition includes extinct or endangered animal species, which makes these collections highly valuable. It also holds the most important cetological collection in southern Italy.
